1. Paper
delivery in Watch Hill, RI for the Westerly Sun. My route was very busy during
the summer, but sparse when all the “summer folks” left.
2. Work on
apartment maintenance with one grandfather and concrete forming with the other.
3. Student Refreshment
Agency at Princeton. We sold snacks and drinks at all home games. Eventually
rose to head co-manager senior year.
4. Real Estate
Sales at Keller Real Estate in Silver Spring, MD. Earned lots of $$ and kept
myself sane during law school.
5. Intern at the
EPA registration division in DC. Learned a lot about beaurocrats and government
regulation of pesticides during my 6 months there.
6. VP for
R&D at A&P Research. Used my experience at EPA to register the first
plant growth regulator with EPA and travel to every state in the lower 48 to visit USDA and university
research centers.
7. Slumlord in
West Palm Beach, FL. Used my real estate experience and law degree to
accumulate 34 low income rental properties in the Okeechobee Blvd slum section
of WPB. All eventually torn down for urban re-development project. The “City
Place” complex now stands on the site.
8. Inventor
and manufacturer and sales of the “Thermalbar” liquid crystal thermometer for
pools and spas. Got a patent, TM and had a blast running the company for 8
years, until a competitor figured out a cheap way around the patent.
All of these early jobs and all the ones that came after,
were preparing me for Water & Sanitation assignments with the Peace Corps.
Though I didn’t realize it at the time.
